You find yourself surrounded by wall after wall of shelves stocked with faded fabrics, old costumes, curtains, and strange creatures. A faint whiff of dust tickles your nose, but the catalogues are clean and well organized. Clearly someone— or something— has taken great care to keep it tidy. You feel a gentle presence in the space near you and turn around to find—
Six-Letter-Notion
Welcome to my website!
Everything will look better on desktop in a wider window, but this site is still functional on mobile. I'm going through another round of major updates right now, so don't be surprised if some pages have slightly different layouts than others! This site is PG13, I may curse a little but there won't be any mature art without a warning, and there won't be any eyestrain or heavily blinking images. It's also image heavy so if your internet is slow, expect longer loading times, sorry! I use javascript in many tab systems, so if you have it disabled you won't see everything.
I'm a theater artist with an interest in ghostly activities, such as haunting old buildings at night (I tend to stay late to clean up after shows), rattling my chains (the 12 odd key-chains on my carabiner, at least) and good old-fashioned poltergeistery (what is a puppeteer if not an unseen being waving objects around?).
Based in Portland, OR, and interested in costuming, set design, and most of all: puppets! Get comfortable, enjoy the scenery, and feel free to hang out in the lobby, where you can:
- See my recent favorite work and read about my larger projects over on the featured board
- Use the index if you’re ever lost or looking for something specific
- Read my resume to learn what I’ve been up to
- Keep tabs on this site’s constant updates via my dev log
- Peek at my desk to read my ramblings and hear about theater I’ve been seeing recently
- See what’s for sale in the storefront
- Head down to the bulletin board to find a show to see
- Continue on your web surfing via my friends & webrings
- Or head right to the library to check out a page or two about my creative endeavors! ☜☜☜
This site acts as my portfolio, but it's also just a personal blog to keep track of my projects, an extended behind the scenes to help you with your own projects, and an archive of my past work. Please feel free to shoot me an email! I love mail! (Or let me know if you come across any broken pages).

Bio:
Notion (it/it's) is a theater designer and puppetmaker who grew up in the Pacific Northwest. In its work it likes to explore mortality, identity, & otherness through the paranormal and mythological. It has previously worked with local productions such as designing puppets and sets for IMAGO theater, and puppeteering on the in-progress puppet series Fogtown. When not onstage you’ll find it coding its personal website, hoarding fabric, and trying to revive a critically panned Broadway musical.

‘Trash to Life’ Puppet Night
"You don't need to be an artist. You just need to reach out your hand and bring something to life." - puppet perverts(@avantgossip)
Prepare your performances - new and old - and your puppets - be they made of trash or treasure - we open this space to see and be seen, and support each other as a community of artists. We'll be starting with an entry-level workshop where together we’ll experiment with the building blocks of puppetry - bringing emotion, motivation, and life to everyday trash. In between will be some time to chat and learn with our puppeteers, and we'll end the evening with an open-mic style sharing! Works in progress are welcome and encouraged.
- 3pm - Object puppetry workshop
- 3:30pm - Show n Tell
- 4pm - 5:30pm - Open Mic
This event is all ages, but is NOT a children's puppet show! There will be adult material. This is a radical puppet event for artsy freaks.
Please RSVP if you can, but as long as we have room all are welcome! Follow this link to RSVP.
Trash Puppet Fiasco
Come join us to experiment with small-scale puppet making — Shadow puppets, hand puppets, and rod puppets. We will provide a variety of recycled materials and offer a few basic examples and techniques. Feel free to bring any materials that you might otherwise discard: fabric, plastic, paper, etc., and if you have masking tape, wooden dowels, or wire coat hangers, those are very useful. You might wanna look around your life for materials that move in special ways, like a broken slinky or umbrella, a fluffy bit of tulle, or even parts of dolls or toys.
Let us revel in the chaos-potential of puppetry! Anyone can do it! Think of all the puppet friends you haven't met yet!
About the hosts: Hazel Briar is a musician and artist based in Portland, OR. She has a PhD in Theatre Historiography from the University of Minnesota. She learned what she knows of puppets from Michael Sommers of Open Eye Figure Theatre in Minneapolis. Her assistant is Alice Briar, seven-year-old shadow puppet enthusiast.
