Goat Mask

Personal project - 2019

Process

I originally made the cardboard structure of this mask sometime in middle school, 2013-2016. It was made entirely of cardboard, with plastic joints on the hinge of the jaw that allow the pieces to rotate. The original mask was covered with felt and painted, and I wore it for Halloween once before storing at away. I didn't want to get rid of it since I was proud of the moving mouth mechanic and not sure I could replicate it, so I held on to it with plans to someday re-purpose the base. Which, in 2019, I finally did.

First I had to strip everything from the previous design off. I decided to use the opportunity for a little challenge and picked all the options randomly, such as the animal, colors, and textures I'd be using. I ended up with a goat-like creature with feathers and fur, with green and blue accents and glow-in-the-dark effects.

Horns and feathers on the old base

The larger horns are made out of cardboard and wire, covered in paper bags. The smaller horns down the center of the nose are small cardboard cones, cut into shape and covered with a layer of paper bags as well. The eyes are ping-pong balls halved and painted.

More paper bags create the shapes and fill in the transitions between the horns and fur

The teeth and tongue are painted sheets of craft foam, and I covered the inside of the mouth with felt. Lastly, he got covered in fur.

Even after all this time, the moving mouth mech still works! It simply fits onto my chin to move when my mouth does. I may still go back and make somefinishing touches, if I ever decide to use it for something. I would like to clean up the fur and the paint job now that I have more expereince, but I like the character.
