Askhemón & Aynardót

Artfight Project, characters by glkgn11 - 2025

Process

I told myself I'd take it easy in artfight this year, but then I found these two characters. I have a soft spot for well-written mythology that feels completely new, and these two are beings carved from clay by their creator. I fell in love with their story and had to make them as they really are.

These are made similarly to penny dolls, with simple string joints. They are scultped out of sculpey clay, with paint mixed in beforehand to get the translucent yellow color of their skin without paint.

There is something a little sentimental to me about making little clay guys. I'm not a religious person but still, life out of clay. It's an ancient tale. I wish I could give more insight on how I sculpt faces, but the truth is I just think simple (especially this small of course). Holes for eyes, placement of the nose, I think abstractly and the details are filled in by the inherit messiness of the scale and human imperfection.

After sculpting and stringing the dolls, I watered down a darker orange to do a wash to seep into the cracks.

This style of joints are less lifelike, less realistic, they easily move at weird angles, but I can still find those poses.

Their hair is made from embroidery thread and yarn, respectively, glued to their heads.

I dug through my fabric scraps for bits for clothes, trying to match the colors but not paying too much attention to specifics. Unfortunately, the clothing restricts their movements a little.
