Crest Embroidery

At the time, I was curious about the ways that we use imagery to represent ourselves and the way that different colors, images, and symbols convey information very quickly. I began researching heraldry, and determined to make myself a crest based off of what I had.

I don't have all of my notes from the time, but I will try to remember everything! Starting with the crest itself, the banner at the top is for the first-born son, and the chevron is for industry and strength. I don't remember the full meaning behind the queen ann's lace, or the swallow. For the supporters, the beaver symbolizes industry, the badger perseverance and boldness. Two pride flags (rainbow and asexual) on either side of the helm. The latin reads "bestiae creaturae nos sunt" which translates to "we are creatures who create", the closest approximation I could make of Adam Savage's quote "we are creatures of creation."

The final piece is nearly 10" wide. It took me multiple months of embroidery, usually during classtime.
